Most Kashmir trips are sold by companies that have never spent a winter in one. Here is what changes when they have — and how to check, before you pay anyone.
“Local” is a claim anyone can print
Search for a Kashmir holiday and nearly every result will tell you it is run by local experts. Very few of them mean it in the way you would assume. Most are booking desks in Delhi, Bengaluru or Gurugram that buy the trip from an operator in the valley, add a margin, and send you a voucher.
That is not fraud, and the trip usually happens. But nobody you spoke to before paying will be in Kashmir while you are, and the person who actually drives you has been handed a job at a price they did not set.
TRAVEL STORY is the operator at the other end of that chain. We are Kashmiri, we have been at Rainawari in Srinagar since 2017, and our family is of this valley going back generations. When you ring, you are speaking to the people who will run your trip.
Four ways to check an operator is local
Apply these to us as readily as to anyone else. They take about five minutes and they are hard to fake.
- A street address in the valley, findable on Maps. Not “Srinagar, J&K” in a footer — an address with a lane name that resolves to a building. Ours is Hassanabad — Naidyar Ln, Karapura, Rainawari, Srinagar 190003.
- A verified Google Business Profile at that address. Verification means somebody stood at that location and proved it to Google. A resold trip rarely has one in Kashmir.
- Reviews that name individual people. Guests who met a real guide name them. Guests who were handed a voucher praise “the service”. Ours name Shahid, repeatedly, without being asked to.
- A phone answered in the valley, in valley hours. Ring before you book and ask something only a local would know — whether the Razdan Pass is open, what the Gulmarg gondola is doing this week. The answer, and how fast it comes, tells you everything.
The difference shows up in the details
Not in the photographs — everyone has the same photographs — but in the parts of a trip that go wrong.
Permits and passes. Gurez needs an inner-line permit, and the Razdan Pass into it is open roughly late May to early October. We arrange the permit and we know week by week what the pass is doing. An agency elsewhere finds out when it is already a problem.
Weather that moves a day. Snow closes roads and reopens them on no schedule. Rearranging a day around that needs someone who can ring a driver they know, not raise a ticket with a supplier.
Where the money lands. Booked directly, more of what you pay reaches the driver, the houseboat family and the guide, instead of the platform in between. That is not charity — it is why they turn up for us the way they do.
Ask for us by name
The clearest evidence we can offer is not something we wrote. It is that guests keep naming the same person, unprompted, in reviews left after they got home.

What is a local Kashmir tour operator?
One that is owned and staffed by people who live in the Kashmir valley, and that runs your trip with its own drivers, guides and hosts rather than selling you a trip it has bought from someone else. We are Kashmiri-owned, based at Rainawari in Srinagar, and have run trips since 2017.
How can I check a Kashmir travel agency is really local?
Look for a street address in the valley you can find on Google Maps, a verified Google Business Profile at that address, reviews that name individual guides or drivers, and a phone number answered in Kashmir during Kashmiri hours. An operator that lists only a mobile number and a city name is usually reselling.
Is it cheaper to book with a local operator?
Usually, because there is no agency in another city taking a margin on top. The bigger difference is what the money buys: booked directly, more of it reaches the driver, the houseboat and the guide rather than the platform in between.
