Sonamarg
Sonamarg is the last meadow before the great Himalaya, and it feels like it. The Sindh river runs hard and grey with glacial melt, the peaks close in on both sides, and the road beyond climbs over the Zoji La pass towards Ladakh. It is the most genuinely mountainous of the day trips from Srinagar.
It is also the most seasonal. Zoji La is snowbound through winter and Sonamarg itself effectively shuts down, so unlike Gulmarg and Pahalgam this is not a year-round destination. The window is roughly May to October, and the meadow is at its best in June and July when the snow has cleared but the glacier is still full.

Thajiwas glacier
The reason most people come. A short pony ride or a walk of about 3 km from the meadow brings you to the glacier snout, with snow underfoot even in high summer.

The Sindh river
It runs alongside the road for most of the drive up and is loud, cold and startlingly clear. There are good stopping points for photographs the whole way.

Zoji La viewpoint
The pass towards Ladakh at about 3,500 m is one of the more dramatic mountain roads in India. You can drive part-way up for the view without committing to the crossing.

Kashmir Great Lakes trailhead
Sonamarg is the standard starting point for the Great Lakes trek, a week-long route past Vishansar, Krishansar and Gadsar. Serious trekking that needs its own planning, not a day walk — we have written up the route, difficulty and season separately.

Short rafting runs operate on the Sindh in summer when the flow is right, arranged locally on the day.

Baltal
Further up the valley, the other Amarnath yatra base. Busy in July and August, quiet and stark the rest of the season.
Best time to visit
May to October only. June and July are the sweet spot, with the meadow green, the glacier still substantial and the road reliably open. September gives clearer air and fewer people. The road over Zoji La and often Sonamarg itself is closed by snow from around November to April.

Getting there
About 80 km from Srinagar, roughly two and a half hours by road along the Sindh valley. Almost everyone visits as a day trip; there is limited accommodation in Sonamarg itself.
It closes in winter
Unlike Gulmarg and Pahalgam, Sonamarg is genuinely seasonal. If you are travelling between November and April, plan on it being unavailable and substitute Doodhpathri or a second Gulmarg day.
Ponies to the glacier
The ride to Thajiwas is run by a local union at fixed rates. Agree the price and the exact destination before mounting, and be aware the walk is entirely manageable on foot.
Altitude and weather
At 2,730 m and rising towards the pass, the weather turns quickly. Bring a warm layer and a waterproof even in July, when the meadow can be warm at noon and cold within the hour.
