Doodhpathri means the valley of milk, and the name comes from the streams, which run so fast and shallow over the rock that they froth white. It sits in the Budgam district about 42 km from Srinagar, and it is the easiest genuinely uncrowded place to reach in the whole valley.

There is nothing to tick off here. No gondola, no monument, no queue. It is emerald meadow, pine forest and cold running water, and the appeal is simply that it is beautiful and almost nobody outside Kashmir has heard of it. That makes it the ideal substitute when Sonamarg is closed for the season.

What to do in Doodhpathri

  1. 01

    Walk the meadows

The main meadow is vast, flat and open, with the Shaliganga stream running through it. Walking is easy and unstructured; you pick a direction and go.

  2. 02

    The white streams

The shallow rapids that give Doodhpathri its name are the thing to see, and they are at their loudest and whitest with the snowmelt in May and June.

  3. 03

    Tousa Maidan

Higher meadows and forest edge above the main valley, reached on foot or by a rough track. Bigger country and even fewer people.

  4. 04

    Picnic properly

This is what Kashmiris come here to do. There are no restaurants worth the name, so bring lunch, find a spot by the water and stay a few hours.

  5. 05

    Pine forest walks

The forest edging the meadow is cool and quiet even at midday, with easy paths and a lot of shade.

  6. 06

    Photography at golden hour

The low light across an open meadow with the pines behind is as good as it gets in Kashmir, and you will not be sharing the view.

Best time to visit

May to September, with June and July the peak for green meadows and full streams. April can still be muddy with late snow at the top. In winter the meadow is under snow and the track becomes difficult, though the drive is beautiful if conditions allow.

Good to know

Getting there

About 42 km from Srinagar, roughly an hour and a half by road through Budgam. The last few kilometres are rougher than the main highway but manageable in a normal vehicle in season.

Bring your own lunch

Facilities are minimal. There are a few tea stalls in season and nothing you would plan a meal around, so pack food and water.

A day trip, not a stay

There is essentially no accommodation. Doodhpathri is a half-day or full-day trip out of Srinagar and back, which is exactly how it should be done.

The winter substitute

When Sonamarg closes from November to April, Doodhpathri is the alternative we usually suggest. Check conditions with us first, since heavy snow can close the final approach.

Questions people ask

About 42 km, or roughly an hour and a half by road through Budgam. It is the closest of Kashmir's meadow destinations and makes an easy day trip.

If you want somewhere genuinely beautiful without crowds, yes. There are no attractions to tick off — it is meadow, forest and water — but it is the least commercialised place you can reach easily from Srinagar.

May to September, with June and July the best for green meadows and full white streams. The name comes from those streams, and they are at their most dramatic with the snowmelt.

Not realistically. There is almost no accommodation, and it is designed as a day trip from Srinagar. Come for the day, bring lunch and go back in the evening.
