Vaishno Devi & Kashmir
For as long as anyone can remember, pilgrims coming to Katra for the Vaishno Devi darshan have looked at the map, seen Kashmir a few hours further north, and been told the road would eat two days of their leave. The train changed that. Since June 2025 a Vande Bharat runs from Katra into Srinagar in about three hours and ten minutes, through the Pir Panjal tunnels and across the Chenab bridge.
So the two halves of this trip finally fit together properly. You do the darshan without hurrying it, sleep in Katra, and are on a houseboat on Dal Lake by lunchtime the next day. This is the itinerary we build most often now, and it is the one we would send our own families on.

Arrive Katra
Reach Katra by train from Delhi, or fly into Jammu and drive the ninety minutes up. An easy evening: register for the yatra, eat early, sleep early. The climb is much kinder on rested legs.

Vaishno Devi darshan
The 13 km climb to the Bhawan, at your own pace — on foot, by pony, by palki, or by helicopter to Sanjichhat if you would rather skip most of the ascent. Back down to Katra for the night. This day belongs to you; we simply make sure everything around it is arranged.

Katra to Srinagar — the Chenab crossing
The Vande Bharat leaves Katra mid-morning and reaches Srinagar around midday, crossing the highest railway bridge in the world on the way. We meet you at Nowgam station and take you straight to your houseboat. Afternoon on the water, and a shikara out at dusk.

Srinagar — gardens and the old city
Nishat and Shalimar in the morning while the light is on the Zabarwan hills, then the old city: Jamia Masjid, the shrines, the bakeries and the walnut-wood workshops. Second night on the houseboat.

Gulmarg and the gondola
Up through the pine forest to the meadow at 2,650 m and the gondola — phase one to Kongdoori, phase two towards Apharwat if the weather is behaving. Back to Srinagar in the evening, or stay up in Gulmarg if you would rather wake there.

Pahalgam and the Lidder
The drive south through the saffron fields of Pampore, then Betaab Valley, Aru and the river walks along the Lidder. Slow, green and the part of the trip most people say they would have given another day to.

Sonamarg, or a day that is yours
Either the drive up the Sindh valley to Sonamarg and the Thajiwas glacier, or a deliberately empty day in Srinagar — the floating market at dawn, Pari Mahal at sunset, and nothing in between. We will tell you honestly which suits your group.

Departure
Breakfast, then to Srinagar airport or back to Nowgam station, depending on how you are travelling home.

Good to know
The train is not guaranteed
Katra–Srinagar seats fill fast and we cannot conjure them. We book as early as your dates allow and tell you plainly if we have to drive instead — before you pay, not after.
Book the helicopter early
Helicopter slots to Sanjichhat go quickly, particularly around Navratri and weekends. If anyone in your group needs it rather than prefers it, tell us at enquiry stage.
Avoid Navratri if you can
The shrine is extraordinary during Navratri and also extremely crowded, with long queues at the Bhawan. If the darshan matters more than the atmosphere, come outside those weeks.
Vegetarian throughout Katra
Katra is entirely vegetarian and alcohol-free, which surprises some visitors. Kashmir is not, so plan any food preferences around that difference rather than assuming one applies to both.
Questions people ask
Eight days is the comfortable shape: one to arrive in Katra, one for the darshan, one to travel into the valley, four in Kashmir and one to fly home. Seven is possible if you take the helicopter at Katra. Anything shorter means either rushing the darshan or seeing only Srinagar.
The climb from Katra to the Bhawan is about 13 km, and most people walking it steadily take five to seven hours up. Ponies, palki and battery cars cover parts of the route, and helicopter services run to Sanjichhat, which removes most of the climb. We book whichever you prefer, but the helicopter should be booked well ahead.
By train wherever seats allow. The Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat takes around three hours and ten minutes through the Pir Panjal tunnels and over the Chenab bridge, against eight to ten hours on the highway. When the train is full we drive, and we tell you which it is before you pay.
Very often it is exactly who it is for. Use the helicopter or a palki at Katra, take the train rather than the highway, and we pace the valley half of the trip gently. Tell us about mobility or medical needs when you enquire and we will build around them rather than hoping for the best. Our senior citizens itinerary goes further in that direction.
March to June and September to October suit both halves. Katra is uncomfortably hot in high summer, and the Navratri periods bring very large crowds to the shrine. Winter works if you want snow in Gulmarg, but expect cold nights at Katra and a longer darshan queue in the Christmas and New Year window.
