Kashmir from Bangalore
The first thing to say, because a fair number of southern travellers have been told otherwise: the holiday itself costs exactly the same from Bengaluru as it does from Delhi. The vehicle, the houseboat, the driver, the guide and the hotel are all priced here in Srinagar. Only the airfare changes, and roughly doubles. If anyone quotes you a higher package price because you are calling from the south, that is a markup and not a cost.
What genuinely does change is the shape of the trip. Direct services from Bengaluru come and go with the season and are not reliable enough to plan around, so most people connect through Delhi — and that connection is what should decide how many nights you book.
Why six nights, not five
A five-night trip from Bengaluru realistically gives you three usable days in the valley once both travel days are accounted for. Kashmir does not reward that. The distances between Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam are mountain distances rather than map distances — Gulmarg is 50 km from Srinagar and takes the better part of two hours.
Six nights turns a sprint into a holiday: two nights on a houseboat, a day at the gondola, two nights around Pahalgam and the Lidder, and one day that belongs to nobody. If five nights is genuinely all the leave you have, we would rather drop Sonamarg from the itinerary than compress all of it — and we will say so when you enquire rather than quietly building a schedule you will not enjoy.
Getting the connection right
Morning beats evening
An early departure from Bengaluru puts you in Srinagar with the afternoon intact — a shikara at dusk on day one instead of a taxi in the dark. An evening arrival costs a full sightseeing day for the same fare.
Leave room at Delhi
A ninety-minute connection at Delhi looks efficient and is not, particularly in winter fog season. Two to three hours costs you nothing and protects the whole trip.
Check the terminal change
Some Bengaluru–Delhi–Srinagar itineraries involve a terminal transfer at Delhi. On a self-transfer booking that is your risk, not the airline's. Book it as one ticket where you can.
Rail is not the shortcut
The new Katra–Srinagar train is wonderful and reaching Katra from Bengaluru by rail runs to two nights. Fly to Delhi or Srinagar and use the train only for the final leg if you want the Chenab bridge without losing the week.
What southern travellers underestimate
The cold, mostly. Bengaluru's climate is gentle year-round and it does not prepare anyone for a 3°C morning at Gulmarg in April, or for what the gondola feels like at the top of phase two. The second is altitude. Gulmarg sits at 2,650 m and Apharwat is higher again. Nobody needs to acclimatise for a Kashmir holiday, but driving straight from the airport up to the meadow on arrival day is a poor first move. We build the first day low and slow for exactly this reason.
Questions people ask
Direct services appear seasonally but are not dependable enough to plan around. Most Bangalore travellers connect through Delhi. Budget roughly twice the Delhi airfare — though the cost of the holiday on the ground is exactly the same as it is for a Delhi family.
Six nights rather than five. The journey is long enough in both directions that a five-night trip loses close to two days to travel, which turns a relaxed itinerary into a rushed one. If you can only take five, we would rather drop Sonamarg than compress everything.
Only the airfare is. Our land package costs the same whether you fly from Bangalore or from Delhi — the vehicle, the houseboat, the driver and the guide are priced in Srinagar. Anyone quoting you a higher package price because you are calling from the south is marking you up.
April to June if you want the valley green and the tulips, September and October for clear air and autumn colour, and late December to February for snow. Southern travellers often underestimate how cold Gulmarg is in April — it is not a light-jacket destination in spring.
